This Month's Home Tip

Long term exposure to radon gas has been found to be the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking among smokers and the leading cause among non-smokers.  Could radon gas be a problem in your home (or a home you are considering purchasing)?  There is a way to get an idea of the likelihood that radon may be an issue.  Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) has accumulated thousands of radon measurement results around the state.  These results are searchable by zip code.  Click here to get DEP Radon Results by Zip Code.  Enter the zip code where your home is located.  The results will show the total number of radon meaurements performed in that area, the lowest and highest results found, and the average of all measurements.  Both PA DEP and the Federal EPA recommend action be taken to lower radon levels when the indoor radon concentration is 4.0 pCi/L or higher.   If the average level reported in your area is 4.0 or higher, you may wish to have your home tested or make your purchase offer contingent upon the results of a radon measurement.  Radon gas measurements should be performed by an individual certified to perform measurements by PA DEP.  Click Here to learn more about radon gas.
